I approach my paintings with a plan but allow the process of working on the piece to guide how it may be resolved. Each painting is handled slightly differently, reflecting on my grandmother’s artistic nature. Her textile and painting style has always informed my work, which can be seen throughout these paintings. When creating each composition, I scan old family photos and manipulate the image by removing people and objects to create scenes that narrate my grandmothers life to reference while painting. I paint in loose brush strokes, and fragment parts of the paintings by leaving blank canvas and only partly rendering the figure and objects. When sewing these pieces, I allow the movement of the thread through the material to guide the form’s construction.
I often create work through painting that carries emotional weight to the canvas, with the desire to tell a story, convey an idea, highlight textural elements within the space, and document the process of painting itself—not necessarily the creation of a realistic form or image, but the message behind the piece. Through colours, digital reconstruction of scenes, loose brush work, textural elements and fragmented parts I attempt to narrate my grandmother's impact on me and the blank space left behind. living:room feels like a fitting place to remember those who felt like home.
