Throughout history, flowers have been symbols of various stages of life and emotions, with the black lily being no exception. Conveying the message of coexistence of beauty and darkness. Often linked to the idea of personal transformation or renewal, where one must navigate the hardships and shadows to find beauty and growth. It is this complexity that makes the black lily such a compelling symbol in both art and culture.

I’m deeply drawn to traditional tattoo styles, especially because of their emphasis on bold lines, strong contrast, and timeless meaning. The simplicity and clarity of these designs speak to me as a reflection of tattooing’s roots. Tattoos, for me, are more than just images; they’re stories told through ink, stories that have been passed down through generations and carry with them a deep sense of heritage. The traditional style allows me to honour the past while also bringing my own voice and approach to each piece.

Using fake skins to experiment and refine my craft. These mock surfaces allow me to push creative boundaries while focusing on the technical aspects of tattooing. These fake skins are a great way for me to explore and perfect the balance between artistic expression and the precision of tattooing.

The decision to present my designs on fake skins with edges that appear cut or torn is to create a bridge between tattooing and fine art, allowing tattoos to be viewed as more than just body adornments. By giving the illusion of a piece being torn from the skin, I invite a conversation about the intersection of body art and gallery-worthy work. The torn edges symbolize the vulnerability of the human body while also highlighting the permanence of the ink.

As I continue to refine my craft, I aim to challenge the perception of tattoos. They are not simply ink on skin but intricate, living works of art. Tattoos tell stories, preserve memories, and reflect the essence of those who wear them. Through my work at Black Lily, I seek to elevate tattoos as a respected, enduring form of artistic expression—one that is as culturally rich and timeless as any piece of fine art.
