I want this work to make people think about the human cost of borders. They can project or warn, but their original intent is to prepare people for violence while at the same time shielding them from it. I have worked in conflict zones around the world and looked at how borders affect people and sovereignty. My switch from working in defence to art has made me more aware of how unaware most people are of geopolitical conflict. I hope making people aware of the arbitrary nature of borders are will improve their understanding of the reality of conflict.
Until humanity can do better will need borders and will continue to die over lines on paper and electronic screens. Once a line on the map is drawn it is etched in people’s mind and becomes more important than old friendships. This work is all based around lines. Etching involves creating lines to hold ink and creates permanent marks in metal that are hard to change, but easy to deepen. My sculptural work actual borders in wire and nationalistic symbols in wax are malleable enough to be changed by the application of force, just like in real life.
